Carl discussing a project with homeowners

About Me

I’ve spent over 25 years working with homeowners, helping people make sense of what’s possible in their homes — and, just as importantly, what isn’t.

Much of my work now focuses on clarity at the start of a project. I help homeowners think clearly about space, feasibility, planning risk and cost, so they can decide how to move forward with confidence rather than uncertainty.

I help homeowners bring clarity and structure to early decisions that can otherwise feel difficult or uncertain.

How I work

I work through focused, time-limited advisory and design-vision sessions, designed to be complete pieces of work in their own right.

I work through focused, time-limited advisory and design-vision sessions, designed to be complete pieces of work in their own right.

This approach suits homeowners who are at the beginning of a project, unsure how to start, stuck between options, considering purchasing a house, on site with no architect or designer involved, or wanting honest experienced input before committing.

When a session ends, the work is done. You leave with clarity, not obligation.

Homes only

I work exclusively with homeowners.

I don’t undertake HMO conversions, commercial or developer-led projects.

This keeps the advice grounded in real houses, real constraints and real decisions about everyday living.

Experience

Over the years I’ve worked on everything from careful internal reconfigurations to major alterations and new homes. That experience allows me to cut through noise quickly and focus on what will genuinely make a difference.

Teaching, Writing & Thinking

Alongside practice, I’ve spent over twenty years as a Senior Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton, where I teach on the master’s programme in Civil Engineering with Architecture.

Teaching sharpens my ability to explain complex ideas clearly and practically — a skill that carries directly into advisory work with homeowners.

I’m also the author and illustrator of Where We Live: A Guidebook to Urban Design, and I write regularly about homes, architecture and decision-making in the Journal section of this site.

A final note

If you’re looking for clarity before commitment, a Home Improvement Workshop advisory session is the right place to start.
