Makeover for listed building and former tea room

This project was to redesign an entire grade II listed building which had been a tearoom in a previous life. All four storeys underwent significant changes, but the interesting part for me was being asked to to add a roof terrace, which would require re-building the entire roof.

To undertake this on a listed building in a conservation area, where it can be difficult to obtain planning permission, was a challenge. The solution was to rebuild the roof in the same style, but with the addition of a new steel structure. I designed the roof terrace to sit snugly within the what looks like the old roof, with access via a new staircase – all hidden behind the roof slopes so it’s hardly visible.

We think the views are to die for.
