Welcome back to my home redesign series! This week, I’m tackling a stone-built home in Kendal with a quirky layout and charming features. This house presents a unique opportunity to create a bright, open-plan living space that is both functional and inviting.
Upon first glance, the house’s current layout is far from ideal. The kitchen, dining, and living areas are disjointed, and the placement of rooms doesn’t take full advantage of the available space and natural light. I aim to open up these areas, creating a more cohesive and usable layout.
One of the major changes involves reconfiguring the ground floor by removing unnecessary walls and creating an open kitchen and living area. By incorporating a large island and optimising the placement of appliances and furniture, the space becomes a central hub for socialising and daily activities.
The basement presents its challenges, including low headroom and the need for structural work. However, with thoughtful design, it can be transformed into a functional part of the home. Wide steps and clever use of light can integrate this lower level with the rest of the house and garden.
Moving to the upper floors, the attic room, currently underutilised, can be expanded with a dormer to create a spacious and comfortable bedroom. This allows us to reconsider using other rooms, potentially adding en-suite bathrooms and more storage space.
