Design for the Weekend: Transforming a Portland Terrace House with Stunning Coastal Views

Share with

This week, I ventured into Portland, Dorset, to explore a charming terrace house with breathtaking views over Chesil Beach and Lyme Bay. Nestled on Mallams, this property, though needing some work, offers an exciting renovation opportunity with its two bedrooms, an attic room, and an additional garden plot with rear lane access.

Upon first glance, the floor plan presented several challenges, notably the peculiar layout requiring passage through the bathroom to access the top bedroom. This inefficient design prompted a complete reimagining of the space to enhance functionality and comfort. My goal was to create an open-plan living area, maximise the stunning coastal views, and consider an annexe at the back.

Starting with the ground floor, I proposed demolishing some outbuildings to make way for a new extension. By opening up the back room and incorporating glazed sliding doors, we could flood the space with natural light, creating a seamless connection to a sunny courtyard garden. This new layout allows for a modern kitchen, dining, and living space, with a cleverly tucked-away toilet under the stairs.

Moving upstairs, the first floor’s new configuration places a bathroom at the front and a bedroom at the back, featuring sliding doors opening onto a balcony. This change not only improves access but also makes the most of the available space, ensuring each room is functional and inviting. The attic room, though compact, offers the potential of a cosy bedroom with spectacular views of Chazzle Beach.

The pièce de résistance is the proposed annexe at the rear. This self-contained unit, with its own entrance from the lane, includes a living space, kitchen, bathroom, and a roof terrace. Imagine enjoying summer evenings with panoramic coastal views from this elevated perch!

This renovation journey in Portland showcases how thoughtful design can transform even the quirkiest of layouts into a harmonious, light-filled home. Stay tuned for more innovative home improvement ideas and transformations in future episodes!
