When I first visited this Victorian home, the lean-to extensions at the back of the house meant it was dark, cramped and a far cry from the open-plan space the owners were yearning for.
I could see that by removing the extensions and rear wall, and then incorporating large rooflights and bi-fold doors, this house could be transformed to boast a sun-filled family room with a smart new kitchen, leading out to the garden.
This project did not require planning consent since it fell within the remit of permitted development. However, like most extensions, it did need building regulations approval.
Carl took our extension wish list for a flexible social space incorporating cooking, dining and living, a space that would have high ceilings and be light and bright – a bit of a challenge when the space is north facing!
He took this wish list and created the reality of a really beautiful, contemporary room, somewhere where we can spend time with groups of friends and family, a room that we both adore.
