Reconnecting a four storey townhouse with the garden (scroll down for video)

When I went to see this four-storey townhouse, the ground floor had a narrow conservatory at the back that didn’t really serve a purpose, as it was too small for dining and limited access to the garden. The goal was to construct a better space for a larger kitchen and additional dining area that would work with the living area and to create a solution for connecting the house and garden.

The garden was considerably lower than the ground floor, so I suggested raising the level and connecting the house and garden with some elegant wooden stairs broken up with a decking area. We used transparent balustrades on either side of the stairs to create an ‘invisible’ safety feature while maintaining the garden’s aesthetics.

The homeowners now use the entire space all year round and really comes into its own in the summer months.

Carl’s expertise, professionalism and creative eye were invaluable in planning the design of our extension. He had ideas we hadn’t thought of and he understood what we wanted to achieve with the project.

His advice throughout the process was invaluable and we have consequently recommended him to friends. We would definitely choose to work with Carl again if we were to embark on future architectural design projects.
