Transforming a Cozy Scottish Cottage: Smart Design Solutions
In today’s video, we journey to the stunning Mull of Kintyre Peninsula on the west coast of Scotland to transform a charming cottage with immense potential. This cottage, located near the sea, boasts 167 square meters of space and a picturesque setting that makes it a real gem. Priced at £225,000, creating a cosy yet functional home is a fantastic opportunity.
Exploring the Cottage and Its Potential
Though potentially charming from the outside with its classic design and lovely side garden, the cottage has a rather jumbled interior layout. Bedrooms are awkwardly linked, and the garden room at the back feels more like an afterthought than a planned space. The first step in our transformation was to assess the existing floor plan and identify areas for improvement.
Planning the Porch Relocation
One of the key changes we made was relocating the porch. Originally situated at the far end of the house, moving it to a more central location greatly improved the flow and accessibility of the interior spaces. This simple change significantly changed how the house feels and functions.
Redesigning the Ground Floor
We moved some rooms around to create a more logical and comfortable layout. We enhanced privacy and usability by placing the bedrooms at one end of the house and the living spaces at the other. This included creating a cosy sitting room with a fireplace, perfect for cold Scottish winters.
Creating Functional Living Spaces
We opened the space at the back of the house to form a large kitchen and dining area. The kitchen now features modern amenities while retaining the cottage’s rustic charm. We also added a utility room and a small bathroom, ensuring that the house meets modern standards of convenience without losing its character.
Integrating Utility and Bathroom Areas
The addition of a utility room and a well-placed bathroom enhances the cottage’s functionality. These spaces are designed to be practical and accessible, making everyday living easier for future occupants.
Enhancing the Kitchen and Dining Area
The new kitchen layout includes a window with plenty of natural light, making it a bright and inviting space. A central island provides additional workspace and a casual dining area, while the dining table is positioned to take advantage of garden views.
Final Design Adjustments and Recap
The final design of the cottage balances the need for modern functionality with the desire to maintain its traditional charm. The new layout offers a better flow, more practical living spaces, and a cosy atmosphere perfect for a family or a peaceful retreat.
