Transforming a Cramped Terrace House: Smart Layout Solutions.
Welcome back to my home redesign series! In this episode, I tackle a challenging terrace house layout with practical and innovative design solutions. The goal is to reconfigure the space to create a functional and inviting home without extending the property.
One of the first issues we address is the placement of the toilet blocking access to the garden. By removing unnecessary walls and rethinking the layout, we can create a more open and cohesive space. I suggest moving the kitchen to the back of the house and the dining room to the front. This improves flow and takes advantage of the natural light and garden views.
For those dealing with basements, we discuss the complexities of converting these spaces into usable rooms. Whether dealing with low headroom or the need for underpinning, I provide insights on the costs and considerations involved. If the basement isn’t an option, we look at other ways to incorporate amenities like a downstairs toilet.
By flipping the staircase or tucking a small toilet under it, we can maximise space efficiency. We also explore extending the house, considering planning permissions and the impact on neighbouring properties. A well-designed extension with a sloping roof and roof lights can bring in more light and create an open-plan kitchen and living area that feels spacious and airy.
Upstairs, I suggest reconfiguring the bedrooms and bathrooms to better use space, ensuring each room is functional and comfortable. This might include creating a larger master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom or adding more storage solutions.
