Transforming a West Coast Scottish Bungalow with Stunning Sea Views

In today’s video, we embark on an exciting journey to transform a quaint bungalow on the west coast of Scotland. Nestled in a picturesque location with breathtaking sea views, this property holds immense potential despite its current cramped and inefficient layout.

Evaluating the Current Layout

Though charming from the outside, the bungalow suffers from a few design flaws. The conservatory, which tends to become unbearably hot in the summer and freezing in the winter, needs a major overhaul. Additionally, the interior layout fails to maximise the stunning sea views of the location.

Key Challenges and Objectives

Our primary goal is to create an open, spacious living area that fully embraces spectacular views. We also aim to improve the overall flow of the house, making it more functional and comfortable for its occupants. This involves rethinking the placement of rooms, especially the bedrooms and bathrooms.

Reimagining the Space: New Floor Plan

The first major change is to remove the outdated conservatory and replace it with a proper extension. This new addition will feature large windows that wrap around the corner of the house, providing uninterrupted views of the sea and allowing natural light to flood the interior.

Creating an Open-Plan Living Area

We create a large, open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area by opening up the space at the back of the house. This modern layout enhances the bungalow’s aesthetic appeal and makes it more functional and inviting.

Redesigning Bedrooms and Bathrooms

To improve privacy and comfort, we reconfigured the bedrooms, placing them on the north side of the house. Each bedroom is designed to have a view of the sea, making it a serene retreat. The new layout also includes a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a well-placed family bathroom.

Incorporating Utility and Entrance Spaces

We redesign the house entrance, moving it to a more central location to improve accessibility and flow. The new entrance leads into a utility room and cloakroom, providing practical storage and functionality.

Final Adjustments and Summary

The transformation of this Scottish bungalow is extensive but well worth the effort. By reimagining the space and making strategic changes, we’ve created a modern, open-plan home that truly makes the most of its stunning location. The new layout not only enhances the bungalow’s beauty but also makes it a more comfortable and enjoyable place to live.
